Cell Therapy: An Innovative Strategy To Repair Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord is a major bundle of nerve fibres that carry impulses ‘to and fro’ from the brain to the rest of the body. The spinal cord is encased securely inside the bony protection called the vertebra. During a spinal cord injury, the cord is damaged by way of fractures and dislocation of the spinal column. The greater the spinal cord injury, the more dysfunctions is experienced by the individual.

Damage or mutilation caused to any part of the spinal cord or the nerves at the end of the spine (caudaequina) can result in a spinal cord injury. This can end in permanent changes in the person’s body strength, functions and sensation below the site of the injury.

According to advance research, it has been proved that therapy with stem cells is a possible remedy to repair spinal cord injuries. Cell treatments and rehabilitation therapies have made it possible for people with spinal cord injuries to lead productive lives. Treatment at NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, under the guidance of renowned neurosurgeon Alok Sharma, have helped more than 748 patients with spinal cord damage, to move independently or with the help of assistive devices. With his incredible knowledge about stem cells, Dr. Alok Sharma has treated over 8123 patients not only with spinal cord injury but also helped individuals with muscular and of neurological conditions. People can also refer to his book,

Incidences That Are The Cause Of Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury is caused by damage to the vertebrae, ligaments, spinal column disks or to the spinal cord itself.A traumatic injury to the spinal cord may stem from a sudden fall or a wound with a gunshot or knife that penetrates and punctures the spinal cord. A forceful blow to the spine can also result in a fracture, crushing of one or more vertebrae. If not treated immediately, the injury may worsen due to bleeding or clot formation, fluid accumulation or inflammation in and around the spinal cord.

Treatment Technique

At NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, the surgeons prove the safety of the bone marrow derived stem cells. The stem cells are extracted from the hip bone of the patient using an aspiration injection. The stem cells are separated from the unwanted tissue using a density gradient centrifugation procedure. The derived autologous stem cells are diluted in CSF before being introduced into the spinal area with the help of an intrathecal injection using a spinal needle.  The infused stem cells contribute in restoring some of the lost sensory functions of the spinal cord.

Dr Alok Sharma is the most coveted surgeon for Neurosurgery in India. With years of experience and excellent surgical techniques, he has treated patients with a wide variety of disorders related to the brain, muscles and spinal cord injury.
